TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 PONTIAC GRAND AM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH THE SECURITY LOCK ENGAGED AND SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO AVOID ON COMING TRAFFIC AND PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND IT FAILED TO START. THE CONTACT LOOKED ONLINE TO FIND A SOLUTION TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WHICH STATED TO LEAVE THE KEY IN THE ON POSITION FOR TEN MINUTES. THE ONLINE REMEDY CAUSED THE BATTERY TO FAIL; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT NEEDED A JUMP START. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE SECURITY LOCK ENGAGED AGAIN AND SHUT THE VEHICLE DOWN. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER REGARDING THE SECURITY SYSTEM AND THEY STATED THAT THE SECURITY SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT REMOVED THE SECURITY SYSTEM AND THAT DID NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,600.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
5 SPEED FAN MOTOR RELAY SWITCH FAILED AFTER ONLY 22,000 MILES ON A 1999 PONTIAC GRAND AM SE SEDAN. FOUR SPEEDS WILL NOT WORK AT ALL. 5TH SPEED WORKS, BUT IS THE HIGHEST SPEED. LOWER SPEEDS ARE NEEDED FOR ADEQUATE VENTILATION OF INTERIOR. WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT REPLACEMENT/REPAIR OF RELAY WOULD COST $200.00 FOR LABOR AND PARTS. I HAVE READ ONLINE OF SIMILAR FAILURE OF THIS PART FROM READING HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME OCCURRENCE HAPPENING TO THEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THE 5TH SPEED OF THIS RELAY WAS "THE ONLY ONE HOT WIRED", AND THAT THE OTHERS WERE NOT, SO THAT THE FAN WILL FAIL EVENTUALLY, NO MATTER IF IT IS TURNED ON OR NOT. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A CAR THAT THE FAN SWITCH QUIT WORKING, EVER. I THINK THIS CONSTITUTES A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY GM AS A SAFETY DEFECT. *TR
