ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHEN SHE DROVE OVER A POTHOLE IN THE ROAD PREFACED BY A CHIMING SOUND. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED AN UPLOAD FOR THE COMPUTER SYSTEM; HOWEVER, THE UPLOAD DID NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER A SECOND TIME BUT THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN WHEN THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING IT HOME. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT REMAINED FOR TWO WEEKS BEFORE IT WAS RETURNED. THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE OF HOW THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT STATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD NOT OCCURRED SINCE IT WAS REPAIRED THE THIRD TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 11,300.

WHEELS
WHILE PERFORMING THE FIRST TIRE/WHEEL ROTATION ON OUR NEW 2011 FORD FUSION SPORT WITH ALUMINUM WHEELS MORE THAN ONE WHEEL STUD BROKE OFF WHEN TORQUING TO FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS. THE FACTORY MANUAL CALLS FOR A TORQUE OF 100FP. INITIALLY LACKING THE FACTORY TORQUE SPEC I STARTED WITH 75FP AND EVEN AT 75FP FELT ONE LUG NUT TURN WHAT FELT LIKE TOO FAR AS COMPARED TO THE OTHERS. I OBTAINED THE TORQUE VALUE FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL (100FP) AND PROCEEDED TO COMPLETE THE TORQUE TO THE RECOMMENDED 100FP. ONE STUD THEN TWISTED OFF PRIOR TO REACHING 100FP. HAVING SEEN THAT THE NHTSA IS PERFORMING AN INVESTIGATION I THOUGHT I WOULD ADD THE FOLLOWING. IT OCCURS TO ME THAT WITH THE ALUMINUM RIMS AND THE SHAPE OF THE LUG NUT THERE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH FRICTION BETWEEN THE LUG NUT AND THE WHEEL TO ALLOW FOR PROPER TORQUE. *TR
