ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING CLAIM NO. 10451047. IN REVIEWING CLAIM I REALIZED THE SAFETY ISSUES NOT FULLY COVERED. A SERIOUS INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE USING THIS VEHICLE. WHILE BRINGING BAGGED LEAVES TO TOWN RECYCLING AREA, A BAG FELL FROM THE TRUCK. MY SON AND I STOPPED IN THE ROAD TO RETRIEVE THE DEBRIS BEHIND THE TRUCK. WHILE RETRIEVING THE DEBRIS THE VEHICLE BEGAN BACKING UP AND ALMOST STRUCK US. I HAD TO RUN TO THE DRIVERS DOOR AND ENTER THE MOVING VEHICLE TO APPLY THE BRAKE TO PREVENT A CRASH. IT BECAME APPARENT THAT WHEN PLACED IN PARK THE SHIFTER MAY IN FACT BE IN REVERSE. THIS ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO MOVE UNEXPECTEDLY. UNFORTUNATELY THIS CAN NOT BE EASILY REPAIRED AS FAILURE OF THE FRAME WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE CAUSE FOR LOSS OF THE SHIFTER SUPPORT. THIS SERIOUS DEFECT CAN BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE THIS TYPE OF DANGEROUS SITUATION OF THE VEHICLE BEING INADVERTENTLY IN REVERSE INSTEAD OF IN PARK! *TR

STEERING:LINKAGES:LINK:DRAG:CONNECTION
I HAVE A 1997 TOYOTA T-100 4X4 EXTENDED CAB PICKUP TRUCK. THE CENTER DRAG LINK IN THE STEERING FAILED. I AM A LICENSED PROFESSIONAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER AND HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF METAL FATIQUE, FABRICATION DEFECTS, ETC. THE CASTING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. THIS COMPONENT HAS NEVER BEEN ABNORMALLY STRESSED TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE. THE RESULT OF THE FAILURE LEFT THE STEERING WHEEL TURNING FREELY WITHOUT CHANGING THE DIRECTION THAT THE WHEELS WERE POINTED. THE FAILURE ACTUALLY OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT, THEREFORE THERE WAS NOT ADDITIONAL DAMAGE. IF THE FAILURE HAD OCCURED MINUTES EARLIER I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE TRAVELING AT SPEED. THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN THE CAUSE OF A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO RELATED ACCIDENT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER. I HAVE PHOTOS OF THE FAILURE THAT WERE TAKEN BY THE DEALER. THE PHOTOS ARE DIGITAL AND ARE SUCH THAT THEY CAN BE EMAILED.
