MY MOTHER OWNS A 1991 MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR4, SINCE SHE ISN'T COMPETENT IN USING THE COMPUTER I AM SENDING THIS IN FOR HER. THIS MODEL CAR HAS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE TRANSAXLE WITH THE 18-SPLINE SHAFT. THIS PART OF THE CAR IS CONSIDERED THE WEAK LINK. THE SHAFT SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT SINCE IT WAS ON A HIGHWAY WITH NO SHOULDERS TO PULL OVER ON. LUCKILY THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC AND THE CAR WAS ABLE TO CHANGE LANES AND PUT THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON WITHOUT INCIDENT. I AM HOPING THAT NHTSA CAN ASSIST OWNERS OF THIS CAR IN GETTING A RECALL FOR THESE 18-SPLINE TRANSMISSIONS. THANKS. *AK

PROBLEM EXISTS WITH CHROME PEELING ON ALL (4) WHEELS, REPLACED BY MITSUBISHI JAN. OF 1999 CONTACTED MITS. SEVERAL TIMES DURING WEEK OF AUG. 20, 2000. WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT GOING TO REPLACE WHEELS HAVE BEEN THROUGH 3 SETS OF TIRES BECAUSE OF THE WHEEL DEFECT. TIRE COMPANYS HAVE EXPLAINED CHROME PEELING CAUSES AIR LEAKAGE BETWEEN TIRE AND RIM CAUSING LOW TIRE PRESSURE. THIS CONDITION IS NOT ONLY DANGEROUS BUT CAUSES EXTREME TIRE WEAR.SERIVCE MANAGER AT JERRY'S MITS. STATED HE KNEW OF DEFECT OF PEELING ON THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL, BUT WHEELS HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED. RECENTLY IN THE BALTIMORE SUN PAPER ARTICLE ABOUT MITS. NOT ISSUING RECALLS FOR SEVERAL SAFETY DEFECTS BUT CORRECTING THE PROBLEMS WITHOUT THE CUSTOMER KNOWING . WOULD LIKE INFORMATION REGARDING THE WHEELS IF OTHER OWNERS HAVE MADE COMPLAINTS.
