WE TEST DROVE A 2007 VERACRUZ AND NOTICED A DISTINCT HORIZONTAL LINE RIGHT IN THE FIELD OF VISION ESPECIALLY ON DARK ROADS. THE LINE SEPARATED BRIGHT HEADLIGHT LIGHT BELOW IT AND DARKNESS ABOVE IT. WE WERE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO LOOK BELOW THE LINE FOR A FULL VIEW OF LIGHT. THE LOW BEAMS DID NOT APPEAR TO GIVE ENOUGH UPPER LIGHT TO LIGHT UP ROAD SIGNS OR THE ROAD AHEAD YET ONCOMING DRIVERS CONSTANTLY FLASHED THEIR BEAMS FOR US TO LOWER OUR HIGH BEAMS WHICH WERE NOT ON. TURNING ON THE HIGH BEAMS THE LIGHT DID NOTHING FOR THE ROAD AND SIMPLY LIT UP THE TREES. WE PURCHASED A DIFFERENT VERACRUZ AND THE HEADLIGHTS REACTED EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. AN ONLINE FORUM SHOWS THAT OTHER VERACRUZ OWNERS EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM. ON JANUARY 7, 2008 WE BROUGHT THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE TO THE ATTENTION OF THE SERVICE CENTER. THE ASSOCIATE THERE INDICATED THAT THERE WERE NO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE US MEET WITH THE AREA HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVE WHEN HE COMES IN ON JANUARY 15, 2008. WHILE WAITING IN THE SERVICE AREA TO SPEAK TO THE REPRESENTATIVE THE ASSOCIATE APPROACHED US AND APOLOGIZED FOR INCONVENIENCING US BECAUSE THE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED HIM THAT HE WAS AWARE OF THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE AND WE WOULD NOT NEED TO MEET WITH HIM. AT OUR INSISTENCE THE REPRESENTATIVE MET WITH US AND SAID HYUNDAI IS AWARE IF THE ISSUES WITH THE HEADLIGHTS AND IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON ALL VERACRUZES. IN FACT HE SAID HE DRIVES A VERACRUZ AND HAS SEEN THE HORIZONTAL LINE THAT WE MENTIONED. ASKED WHAT HYUNDAI WAS DOING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM HE REPLIED NOTHING. HE SAID HYUNDAI ASSUMES THAT THE PROBLEM IS NATURE TO THE HIGH OUTPUT LIGHTS USED AND THEY DO NOT INTEND TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. A LETTER OF COMPLAINT TO THE VICE PRESIDENTS OF SERVICE AND SALES AT HYUNDAI WENT UNANSWERED. *TR |

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL |
WHILE DRIVING AT 70 THE CAR JERKED, COMPLETELY STOPPED ACCELERATING. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. LUCKILY WE WERE NEAR AN EXIT, WE WERE NOT REAR ENDED BY A TRUCK AND WERE ABLE SHIFT LANES AND TO ROLL OFF AND PUT OUR HAZARD LIGHTS ON. AFTER CHECKING THE ENGINE, A LOCAL SERVICE MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THERE WAS AN ERROR CODE RELATED TO THE THROTTLE CONTROL. ON RESTARTING THE CAR THE ENGINE LIGHTS RESET AND THE CAR RAN NORMALLY. RETURNING HOME WE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO HYUNDAI. WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AS THERE WERE NO ERROR CODES IN MEMORY EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THE THROTTLE SENSOR. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL AN ERROR WAS RECORDED IN THE MEMORY OF THE COMPUTER BECAUSE HYUNDAI USA WOULD NOT COVER ANYTHING UNDER WARRANTY. WHEN I ASKED IF IT WAS LIKELY TO OCCUR AGAIN, I WAS TOLD IT MOST LIKELY WOULD HAPPEN SOON AND TOO BE CAREFUL. A MONTH LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN TRAVELING AT ABOUT 65 MILE PER HOUR. THIS TIME THERE WAS NO SHOULDER BUT I WAS ABLE TO PARTIALLY PULL OFF THE ROAD AND PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AS CARS DROVE BY AND AVOIDED HITTING MINE. THIS SAME SITUATION OCCURRED FOUR (4) MORE TIMES AS I WAS ABLE TO GET MY CAR FINALLY BACK HOME TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER TO SERVICE THE CAR. THE HYUNDAI DEALER REPLACED BOTH THE THROTTLE SENSOR AND THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY. HAVING RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM WITH ACCELERATION, I HAVE LEARNED THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SIMILAR AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. AFTER SPEAKING WITH OTHER HYUNDAI SERVICE TECHNICIANS I WAS TOLD OFF THE RECORD THAT THIS WAS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM. AS THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR IS LESS THAN $29 I AM NOT SURE WHY HYUNDAI DID NOT ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT THE CAR OR AS A RECALL AS THE CONSEQUENCES COULD BE MUCH MORE SERIOUS. *KB |
