I HAD JUST CHANGED MY OIL IN APRIL 2, 2001 AND I HAD DRIVEN IT ABOUT 3,000 MILES AND I STARTRD TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE. MY OIL PRESSURE GUAGE NEVER GAVE ME ANY WARNINGS THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL. ALL OF A SUDDEN I WAS DRIVING IT TO WORK AND THERE WAS THIS TERRIBLE NOISE, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO OIL IN IT EXCEPT FOR ABOUT 1/4 QUART. IWAS IN SHOCK BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS TOOK CARE OF MY CARS. I HAVE A 1982 TOYOTA TRUCK WITH 148,000 MILES ON IT AND IT IS STILL RUNNING. I FEEL THERE WAS A DEFAULT IN THE MECHANISM SOMEWHERE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE OIL WAS GOING THRU THE ENGINE AND EVAPORATING THRU THE EXHAUST. THAT IS WHY I SHOWED NO LEAKS IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR THE LOSS OF OIL. COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY SITUATION? POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT
CONSUMER STATES OVER TIME, PART OF THE AXLE SHAFT ONTO WHICH THE BEARING IS FITTED BEGINS TO BECOME THINNER, IN THE SAME MANNER THAT A CYLINDRICAL PIECE OF PLSTICENE WOULD BECOME THINNER IF ROLLED BETWEEN THE THUMB AND FOREFINGER, THE BEARING GRADUALLY BECOMES LESS AND LESS TIGHTLY FITTED ONTO THE AXLE SHAFT, THE FIRST SIGNS ARE A CLUNKING NOISE HEARD WHEN TURNING OR GOING OVER BUMPS, THEN SCRAPING NOISES ARE HEARD FROM THE REAR BRAKES DURING TURNS, BOTH AXLE SHAFTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, IF THE SYMPTOMS ARE IGNORED, THE BEARING BECOMES SO LOOSE THAT IT BEGINS TO ROTATE AROUND THE AXLE SHAFT, CAUSING THE SHAFT TO OVERHEAT AND BREAK WHILE THE VEHICLE IS UNDERWAY. *SLC
